24 - 26 September, 2018 | Rydges Sydney Central, Sydney, NSW

Conference Day Two: Wednesday, 26 September 2018

8:30 am - 9:20 am COFFEE AND REGISTRATION

9:20 am - 9:30 am Opening Remarks From Chair Person

9:30 am - 10:10 am Project Assurance: The Foundation of Successful Capital Projects

The construction industry performs large investments in very complex and risky environments. To ensure the project meet the objectives, most organisations conduct independent assurance reviews prior to a decision point to determine whether the project is ready to progress to the next phase or not. Without independent reviews the project may proceed without any validation. Including case study projects of infrastructure projects in Asia and Middle East. The main objectives of this presentation are:
  • Understand the main causes leading to project failures
  • Understand the purpose of project assurance reviews
  • Determine when is the right time to perform independent reviews
  • Understand the level of influence versus the project lifecycle
  • Understand the key areas of project assurance reviews

Table One

11:20 am - 12:20 pm Exploring financing models behind complex PPP projects

Table Two

11:20 am - 12:20 pm How are various utilities going to share space/ achieve intermodal connections?

Table Three

11:20 am - 12:20 pm Prioritising the maintenance and continued improvement of aging assets so they’re catalysts for urban growth

12:20 pm - 1:20 pm LUNCH

1:20 pm - 2:00 pm Managing Pavement Performance for Increased Optimisation of Road Infrastructure

This session will explore Wollongong city’s geotechnical investigations of pavement performance. Developers have been able to recycle leftover materials from road surfacing which contributes to the future proofing of pavement infrastructure. Results show that of the 880km of road within the city, 71% are currently performing within their design parameters despite the infrastructure being more than two and half times their design life. This case study will include:

  • Initial How council manages to construct given the challenge of 140 mapped out landslides that affect their road infrastructure
  • Comparing costs: Reconstruction is around $260/ m2; Resurfacing or rehabilitation is between $16 to $46/m2

1:40 pm - 2:20 pm Managing Network Optimisation at Vic Roads

This session will explore the modernisation of Australia’s transport network and the approach taken by VicRoads in order to increase the amount of car throughput per day. This session will explore:

  • Measuring and effectively using data to manage traffic flow
  • Optimisation as a tool to increase road safety- Vicroads has reduced accidents by 30% over 5 years through effective monitoring
  • Increasing performance and long term productivity of road infrastructure

2:50 pm - 3:30 pm The Design and Maintenance of ITS Infrastructure on VicRoads

Road related data is essential to the ability to effectively manage the road network. This session will explore:

  • Understanding the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of ITS infrastructure and road side devices
  • Managing the development of complex ITS infrastructure
  • Monitoring network & system performance
  • Developing an integrated ITS transport solution

3:30 pm - 4:10 pm Queensland Beams Brooke Case Study: Overcoming the Challenges of Constructing through a Culturally Significant Area

This case study of the Beams Brooke Bridge will explore how developers successfully constructed through a culturally significant area in less than 5 weeks.

  • The construction challenges of constructing through remote areas
  • A new approach to constructing through culturally significant areas
  • Examining the use of modular construction to meet tight budget and time frame requirements
  • Strategies to approach the threat of flood loads
